Edwardian Furniture

Edwardian furniture has flourished most during the reign of England’s king Edward VII (1901-1910). It was the time when furniture style became quite old but the demand for antique furniture became fashionable among people.
Art Nouveau furniture gradually became influential because of its heavy furnishing-curving table legs, rolled arms, depicted leaf and flower motifs, feminine figures, lightweight fabrics, lengthened lines in fabrics with floral design and flowing graphics. Ornamentally curled arms and broad backs, bright bold colors are familiar features in Edwardian chair. Couches and wing-back chair were also attracted the attention of people. There was no particular style or specific design prominent in that era but the mixture of styles, which represented celebration of different culture and class, was dominating. The influence of Neoclassical and Art Deco designs was also seen and it shows that it was era of revivalism when previous designs evolved in a new forms and demands.

Regency Furniture

Regency style, an English architecture, became popular during the reign of George (1811-1820) who had the most powerful influence on art of the time. This era is chiefly renowned for innovative and decorative furniture and classical revival. Various architectural designs of different periods and countries mingled features of Gothic and Chinese art, French empire, and French Directoire and created a superb classical form with winged griffins, hocked animal legs and archaic lion masks that won the heart of furniture lovers and received warm welcome from wealthy patrons. Intricate design evolved from simple form and fashion of furniture of the past. Thomas Hope, George Smith, and Henry Holland are some of the notable designers who, giving furniture a wealthy look, demonstrated their identity as individual.
Mahogany woods of dark color were commonly used and besides Rosewood, especially for cabinet work, and Satinwood were also still in use. Graining wood, a quite expensive wood, was choice of wealthy people. In 19th century it was extensively used for cabinet work.

William and Mary Furniture

William and Mary, who ruled England from 1688 to 1702, had considerable influence on style of furniture. It had similarity between heavy and highly decorated Jacobean style and fabulous designed Queen Anne style. Holland had left its influence on English furniture prominently because of the imported ideas taken by the king. Wonderful decorative effect was prominent on surface such as parquetry, lacquer, elaborate veneering and marquetry. Furniture was made of oak but walnut, maple, pine, sycamore and apple-wood were common in use. The turned legs with inverted cups or in a trumpet shape, serpentine shaped stretcher and drop handles were most popular characteristics of William and Mary furniture. The double-arched back was common on cabinets and settees. People liked high backed chair, rounded at top with beautiful carving; chairs with square or cabriole legs and ball or claw feet were introduced. Glided framed mirror, which usually hung over toiler table, day beds, easy chairs and Gateleg table were popularly used in this period.

Jacobean Furniture

Jacobean Furniture came into existence during the reign of King James (1603-1688) but became popular at the time of Charles I, successors of King James, who is known more sophisticated than his father. The striking similarity with Elizabethan style- highly ornamented, sturdy in construction and heavy carvings with wide number of animal faces, which confirmed the sincerity of accomplished furniture makers of that era, made it popular though they were quite uncomfortable. Jacobean furniture was also called as Early American furniture. Wax layer was used to conserve ripened dark oak luster. After the civil war broke, numerous wealthy people left England and puritan rule overtook the leadership. They captured the furniture market but the design became increasingly less ornamented due to lack of interest.

Elizabethan Furniture

Elizabethan style, the name derived from Queen Elizabeth (1558-1603), was remarkably beautiful in English architecture and developed between the period of gothic and renaissance. 4.Sophisticated four poster beds with solid or draped testers

Its highly decorative architectural design made it quite expensive that only wealthy class could afford it. Now Elizabethan style is extremely rare and it can only be seen in mansions or museums. Pieces which are found in market place are exceptionally expansible.

Tudor Furniture

Tudor Furniture, which came into existence during the reign of King Henry VII (1485), was only possessed by wealthy and royal people for whom it meant a special flavor for luxurious life. Tudor furniture was very costly and certainly not affordable for middle class people and it started the history of English furniture.

Tudor chairs, made of oak or local woods, were highly decorative, heavy and carved and high-backed. Wrought-iron studs, hinges, Metal straps and latches where common.
Wooden Benches were commonly used as a table which could easily be removed after meal or dinner. Free-standing tables were sporadically used as both chair and table.
