Regency Furniture

Regency style, an English architecture, became popular during the reign of George (1811-1820) who had the most powerful influence on art of the time. This era is chiefly renowned for innovative and decorative furniture and classical revival. Various architectural designs of different periods and countries mingled features of Gothic and Chinese art, French empire, and French Directoire and created a superb classical form with winged griffins, hocked animal legs and archaic lion masks that won the heart of furniture lovers and received warm welcome from wealthy patrons. Intricate design evolved from simple form and fashion of furniture of the past. Thomas Hope, George Smith, and Henry Holland are some of the notable designers who, giving furniture a wealthy look, demonstrated their identity as individual.
Mahogany woods of dark color were commonly used and besides Rosewood, especially for cabinet work, and Satinwood were also still in use. Graining wood, a quite expensive wood, was choice of wealthy people. In 19th century it was extensively used for cabinet work.
